Chapter 7 - The Race Against Water

The horrific image of my son drowning in the freezing lake sent a jolt of pure adrenaline through my veins.

Teresa handed me a black ink pen with a terrifyingly calm and calculated expression.

I snatched the pen from her hand and aggressively signed my name on every single page of the transfer documents.

I threw the signed papers directly at her face and demanded the exact location of the vehicle.

Teresa casually picked up the legal documents, checking my signature carefully to ensure they were entirely valid.

She smugly told me the car was submerged near the old eastern pier, exactly three miles away.

I instantly lunged forward and brutally kicked the suppressed handgun completely out of her manicured grip.

I grabbed a heavy bronze vase from the table and smashed it against her temple, knocking her completely unconscious.

I pulled a pocket knife from my jacket and quickly cut the thick rope binding Ana Lucía's wrists.

I told the terrified doctor to stay hidden and call the federal authorities the moment I left.

I sprinted down the apartment stairs, hotwired a neighbor's old truck, and sped recklessly toward the eastern pier.

I pushed the engine to its absolute limit, tearing down the dirt roads while praying to a God I barely believed in.

I arrived at the deserted wooden pier and saw fresh tire tracks leading straight off the edge into the dark water.

I ripped off my heavy jacket and dove headfirst into the freezing, murky depths of the lake.

The icy water instantly paralyzed my lungs, but I forced my eyes open in the oppressive darkness.

I swam deeper until I saw the faint white outline of a sunken sedan resting in the thick mud.

I reached the vehicle and desperately yanked on the driver's side door, but the water pressure held it firmly shut.

I swam to the rear window and smashed it with a heavy rock I had grabbed from the shore.

I reached inside the flooded backseat and pulled out a small bundle wrapped tightly in a blue blanket.

I kicked hard toward the surface, bursting into the night air while gasping desperately for oxygen.

I dragged the heavy, soaked bundle onto the wooden dock and frantically tore the wet blanket open.

Instead of my beautiful baby boy, I stared down at a lifeless, high-tech weighted medical doll.

I heard the terrifying, unmistakable sound of a heavy pump-action shotgun being loaded in the shadows behind me.
