Chapter 2 - The Poisoned Truth

The metal door hinges groaned in protest as the heavy crowbar struck again.
Ana Lucía panicked and dragged me toward the rear ventilation exit.
We slipped through the narrow maintenance shaft just as the main morgue doors burst open.
I heard the heavy footsteps of two men rushing into the freezing room.
One of them cursed loudly when he realized the morgue was completely empty.
I recognized the deep, raspy voice instantly.
It was Victor, the head of private security for my family's estate.
My mother had sent her personal guards to silence the only doctor who knew the truth.
I led Ana Lucía down the alleyway and pushed her into the passenger seat of my car.
I told her she needed to leave the city immediately for her own safety.
She handed me a crumpled piece of paper before I drove her to the bus station.
The paper contained the address of an old abandoned monastery owned by my family's holding company.
I dropped the doctor off and sped back toward my mother's sprawling mansion.
I needed to confront the head maid, Rosa, who had served our family for twenty years.
I found Rosa alone in the estate's massive kitchen, aggressively scrubbing a perfectly clean countertop.
She jumped in pure terror when I locked the kitchen doors behind me.
I pulled the navy-blue button from my pocket and placed it on the marble counter.
I told her I knew Rodrigo was involved in the murder of my wife.
Rosa began to weep uncontrollably, covering her face with her wrinkled hands.
She confessed that Rodrigo and Teresa had planned the horrific attack for months.
They needed to eliminate Camila to stop her from exposing their massive financial embezzlement.
Rosa reached into her apron and pulled out a small, blood-stained silver key.
She whispered that the key unlocked a hidden room at the old monastery where they were keeping my son.
I reached out to take the key, but Rosa suddenly gasped for air.
She clutched her throat as thick white foam began to pour from her mouth.
She collapsed onto the kitchen floor, violently convulsing in a pool of her own vomit.

I realized with absolute horror that the cup of tea she had been drinking was laced with a lethal neurotoxin.
Suddenly, the kitchen doors rattled, and my brother Rodrigo shouted my name from the hallway.
