Chapter 4 - The Lawyer's Mistake

I held the burner phone tightly against my ear while my blood ran absolutely cold.
Arturo clearly thought he was speaking directly to my brother Rodrigo.
I deepened my voice slightly, mimicking Rodrigo's arrogant and dismissive tone.
I told Arturo that the situation was entirely under control and the documents would be signed.
Arturo laughed a greasy, unpleasant laugh that made my skin crawl with disgust.
He praised my mother's brilliant plan to fake Camila's natural death to steal the estate.
The lawyer foolishly revealed that the foreign company buying our vineyards was completely fake.
The entire corporation was a shell entity owned entirely by Teresa and Rodrigo.
They were literally buying the family business from themselves to completely cut me out of my grandfather's fortune.
I asked Arturo where my mother was currently holding the collateral.
Arturo paused, clearly confused by the strange phrasing of the question.
He reminded me that Teresa had taken the baby to the old boathouse on the edge of the family lake.
I hung up the phone instantly and crushed it beneath the heel of my boot.
I now knew exactly where they were keeping my innocent child.
The lake was located on the extreme southern border of our massive vineyard property.
I sprinted out of the monastery and drove my car dangerously fast down the winding mountain roads.
I parked a mile away from the lake and continued the rest of the journey entirely on foot.
The dense grapevines provided perfect cover as I crept silently toward the dark water.
I could see the silhouette of the old wooden boathouse illuminated by a single harsh spotlight.
Two armed security guards were patrolling the wooden dock with heavy assault rifles slung across their chests.
I picked up a large jagged rock from the dirt path, preparing to fight for my son's life.
I stepped out of the shadows, ready to launch a desperate ambush against the mercenaries.

Before I could take a single step forward, a cold metal gun barrel was pressed directly against the back of my skull.
Rodrigo whispered into my ear that he had been waiting for me to figure it out.
