Chapter 5 - The Civilian Mistake

The piercing sound of a tactical alarm echoed through the hospital corridor.

Grant flinched and looked nervously toward the doorway.

Four heavily armed Military Police officers rushed into the room in full tactical gear.

They immediately surrounded Grant and the woman.

The lead officer placed his hand on his holstered weapon and ordered them to step away from the bed.

Grant puffed out his chest and tried to look intimidating.

He pointed his finger at the officers and told them to back off.

He pulled a shiny gold badge out of his pocket and flashed it at the military police.

He proudly declared that his brother was a local police lieutenant.

He claimed that the civilian custody order gave him the absolute right to remove the child from the premises.

He ordered the military police to stand down and let him leave with his daughter.

The lead MP did not even blink at the civilian badge.

He looked directly at me and waited for my official command.

I sat up straight and looked Grant directly in his eyes.

I explained to him that he had made a catastrophic jurisdictional error.

I told him that this hospital was located on a federal military installation.

I informed him that local civilian court orders held absolutely zero authority on this base.

Grant's arrogant smile finally began to fade.

He realized that his brother's local police connections were completely useless here.

He grabbed the forged custody papers and tried to shove them into the officer's chest.

The officer grabbed Grant's wrist and twisted it sharply behind his back.

Grant yelled in pain and dropped the documents onto the floor.

The woman named Chloe began to panic as the officers moved in closer.

She backed away from Grant and pressed herself against the wall.

She screamed at Grant to fix this situation immediately.

She yelled that they needed the baby to secure the trust fund money by midnight.

She hysterically confessed that they owed five million dollars to a dangerous international cartel.

She cried that the cartel would kill them both if they did not deliver the money tonight.

Grant desperately tried to silence her, but the confession was already out in the open.

My blood ran completely cold as I realized the true depth of his betrayal.

He had sold me and my daughter out to organized crime to cover his massive debts.

I looked at Captain Miller and gave him a silent nod.

Captain Miller tapped his earpiece and issued a Code Red lockdown order.

Heavy steel blast doors slammed shut across every exit in the maternity ward.

I told Grant that nobody was leaving this building alive without my permission.
