Chapter 4 - The Forged Papers

I stared at the hospital door as pure rage replaced my exhaustion.

Grant quickly grabbed the woman by her arm and whispered something in her ear.

He guided her toward the main elevators leading up to the maternity floor.

Captain Miller looked at me and asked if I wanted them intercepted by military police.

I shook my head and told him to let them come directly to my room.

I wanted to look my husband in the eyes when he realized he had lost.

I gently placed my sleeping daughter into the clear hospital bassinet beside my bed.

I adjusted my posture and waited in complete silence.

The heavy wooden door to my room swung open a few minutes later.

Grant walked in with the young woman trailing closely behind him.

He stopped dead in his tracks when he saw me sitting up in the hospital bed.

His eyes darted nervously between me and the newborn baby.

He quickly composed himself and forced a fake smile onto his face.

He told me he was so relieved that I had survived the terrible accident.

I did not say a single word in response to his pathetic lie.

The woman beside him crossed her arms and looked around the luxurious VIP suite in disgust.

She complained that a low level secretary did not deserve such expensive medical treatment.

Grant reached into his designer briefcase and pulled out a thick stack of legal documents.

He tossed the papers carelessly onto the foot of my bed.

He declared that our marriage was officially over.

He demanded that I sign the divorce settlement and full custody agreement immediately.

I glanced down at the documents and noticed the signature of a local civilian judge.

Grant smirked and explained that he had already filed an emergency petition this morning.

He claimed that I was mentally unfit and financially unstable.

He told me that the judge had granted him complete control over all my personal assets.

He boasted that he knew all about the secret trust fund my grandfather had left me.

He laughed and said he was going to enjoy spending my fifty thousand dollar inheritance.

I realized in that moment that Grant had completely misread the financial documents he stole.

He thought the trust was worth fifty thousand dollars instead of twenty million.

He leaned over my bed and threatened to take my baby away if I refused to sign.

He told me I was entirely powerless to stop him.

I looked at him calmly and reached under my pillow.

I pressed the hidden emergency button that connected directly to the base security command.

I told Grant that he was about to learn a very hard lesson about true power.
