Chapter 3 - The Secret Ward

The medical team worked frantically to administer a counteragent to the poison in my bloodstream.
I could feel my heart rate stabilizing as the medication took effect.
The pain of labor intensified significantly as my body fought to bring my daughter into the world.
I refused to let Grant win this battle.
I pushed with every ounce of strength I had left in my exhausted body.
After three grueling hours, the room finally filled with the beautiful sound of a crying baby.
The nurse placed my perfect, healthy daughter gently onto my chest.
Tears streamed down my face as I kissed her warm forehead.
I promised her that I would protect her from the monsters in this world.
Captain Miller stood guard directly outside my hospital room door.
He entered the room quietly and handed me a secure digital tablet.
He told me that the hospital security network had just flagged a familiar face in the civilian lobby.
I looked at the live camera feed on the screen.
Grant was standing at the front desk of the hospital.
He looked completely relaxed and did not have a single scratch on him.
He was leaning over the counter and speaking to the civilian receptionist.
I turned up the volume on the tablet to hear the audio feed.
Grant was demanding to know where the bodies from the recent highway accident had been taken.
He firmly believed that I was already dead and resting in a body bag.
He told the receptionist that he was a grieving widower who needed a death certificate immediately.
The receptionist looked at him with a confused expression.
She typed my name into the hospital database to find my location.
She politely informed him that I was not in the morgue.
She told him that I had just been admitted to the maternity ward as a VIP patient.
The color instantly drained from Grant's face as he realized his plan had failed.
I watched as he frantically pulled his cell phone from his pocket.
Before he could make a call, the hospital entrance doors slid open behind him.
A young, beautiful woman walked into the lobby and wrapped her arms around his waist.
She asked him if the administrative paperwork for his dead wife was finally finished.
I zoomed the camera in on the woman's left hand.
She was wearing a massive diamond ring that I recognized instantly.
It was the exact custom ring I had purchased for myself as a promotion gift two years ago.
My husband had stolen my jewelry to propose to his mistress.
I handed the tablet back to Captain Miller with a completely calm expression.

I told him to grant them full security clearance to access the VIP floor.
I wanted to look into my husband's eyes when he finally walked into my trap.
