Chapter 1 - The Final Discard

My name is Tessa Langley.

The night my husband told me to leave our home while I was in labor became the night he lost absolutely everything.

Three months before that terrible evening, my grandfather passed away after a brief illness.

He was the man who carried me through the most difficult years of my childhood.

He was the only person who believed in my military career before anyone else did.

In his final estate plan, he left me a family trust valued at nearly twenty million dollars.

There was only one strict condition attached to the money.

The legal process had to remain completely confidential until every single review was finalized.

My attorneys warned me that discussing the inheritance too soon could complicate the process and delay the transfer.

I decided to stay completely silent about the money.

My husband believed I was nothing more than a mid level administrative officer handling routine assignments.

He never realized I was actually a highly decorated Army colonel preparing to lead a sensitive strategic unit.

By the seventh month of my pregnancy, the man I married had become almost impossible to recognize.

He missed nearly every single medical appointment.

He stayed out later each night and offered no valid excuses.

Even the simplest conversation seemed to annoy him immensely.

The first contraction arrived a little after ten o clock on a rainy Thursday night.

I had been standing in the kitchen making a cup of tea when a sudden wave of pain forced me to lean against the counter.

Grant was sitting at the dining table with his laptop open in front of him.

He wore a brand new dress shirt I had never seen before.

I waited until the discomfort eased before I told him it was time to go to the hospital.

Without lifting his eyes from the screen, he told me that he was busy.

He looked at me with no concern and quiet impatience.

He told me that I was nothing but dead weight holding him back.

He ordered me to pack my bags and leave the house immediately.

I did not argue with him or beg for his help.

I grabbed my car keys and walked out into the freezing rain.

I climbed into my sedan and started the engine to drive myself to the clinic.

I merged onto the dark highway as the contractions grew much closer together.

The road was slick with freezing rain and motor oil.

I saw the red taillights of a stalled truck sitting directly in my lane.

I moved my foot from the gas pedal to the brake.

I pressed down with all my strength.

The brake pedal snapped entirely to the floorboard without any resistance.

My car continued accelerating straight toward the massive steel truck.

I realized that someone had completely severed my brake lines.

I gripped the steering wheel tightly as panic washed over my exhausted body.

May you like

I knew I had only a few seconds to make a decision that would save my baby.

I braced for the inevitable impact as the metal trailer loomed larger in my windshield.
