Chapter 8 - Into the Lion's Den

I violently shook my head, refusing to take the weapon, but Marcus forced my fingers around the cold grip.
"You have the will, you have the vault code, you are the only one who can end this," he wheezed, sliding down the brick wall.
I knew he was right, so I shoved the heavy pistol deep into the pocket of my cardigan.
I found a secure, locked utility closet near the rear entrance of the bank and hid Lucas safely inside with a stern promise to return.
I wiped the dirt from my face, stood up straight, and walked into the grand marble lobby just as the bank doors opened for the morning rush.
I marched directly up to the head teller and slammed the legal document Samuel had verified onto the pristine glass counter.
The teller's arrogant expression quickly vanished, his face going completely pale as he read the supreme authorization codes Mr. Christopher had included.
He stammered an apology and immediately escorted me past the security gates and down into the high-security underground vaults.
The air grew freezing cold as we approached a massive, circular titanium door at the end of a long concrete hallway.
I punched in the secret numerical code Marcus had given me, praying that it was still active.
A heavy mechanical clunk echoed through the corridor, and the massive titanium door slowly swung open on its perfectly balanced hinges.
I stepped inside the brightly lit vault, my eyes landing on a thick, leather-bound master ledger sitting on a velvet pedestal.
This was the absolute proof of Justin’s crimes, the key to clearing my name and securing our future.
I reached out and grabbed the heavy book, letting out a massive sigh of relief.
Suddenly, the heavy titanium vault door slammed shut behind me with a terrifying, final boom.

Justin stepped out from the shadows of a large safety deposit box, a sickening smile spread across his face.
He was holding Lucas tightly by the collar of his jacket, pressing a sharp hunting knife against the boy's throat.
