Chapter 6 - The Voice in the Shadows

I immediately covered Lucas's eyes and backed away slowly toward the exit.
I knew with terrifying certainty that Justin's hired men had gotten to Samuel before I could.
I was entirely alone now, framed for murder, and hunted by a billionaire with endless resources.
Suddenly, a deep, raspy voice echoed from the dark rafters above us.
"Turn off the flashlight, Helena, unless you want them to find you too," the voice commanded calmly.
I clicked the light off, my hands shaking so violently I nearly dropped it.
A tall, broad-shouldered man stepped out from behind a concrete pillar into the dim moonlight filtering through the skylight.
I gasped as I recognized the scarred face of Marcus, Mr. Christopher’s fiercely loyal head of security.
Marcus had mysteriously vanished over a year ago, and everyone assumed he had simply quit and moved away.
He walked over to us, his boots crunching on the loose gravel, and explained that Mr. Christopher had faked his disappearance.
The old man knew Justin was slowly poisoning him and embezzling millions from the corporate accounts.
Marcus had been working in the shadows ever since, gathering undeniable proof to expose Justin's crimes.
"Samuel was a good man, but he talked too loudly on unsecured phone lines," Marcus said softly, looking at the broken glasses.
"I have the master ledger that proves Justin bought the poison and bribed the medical examiners."
"We just need to retrieve it from Mr. Christopher's secret vault at the First National Bank."
He handed me a piece of paper with a long string of numbers written on it.
Before I could ask him how we were supposed to get into a bank vault in the middle of the night, the warehouse was suddenly illuminated by blinding blue and red lights.

The deafening wail of a dozen police sirens pierced the quiet night.
A heavily armed SWAT team kicked in the front doors, and a dozen red laser sights painted a terrifying pattern directly across my chest.
