Chapter 10 - The Rightful Heir

I stared down the barrel of the gun at Justin, my mind racing frantically for a way out of this impossible nightmare.

As my eyes darted around the steel room, I noticed a small, blinking red light panel hidden on the wall directly behind him.

I recognized it immediately as the bank's silent alarm override, a system connected directly to the local FBI field office rather than Justin’s corrupted local police.

I lowered the gun slightly, feigning defeat, before suddenly grabbing the heavy leather ledger from the table.

I hurled the massive book with all my strength straight at Justin's smug face.

The heavy binding struck him squarely in the nose with a sickening crunch, causing him to drop his phone and stumble backward in shock.

I lunged forward, tackling him to the hard steel floor and pinning his arms down.

"Hit the red button, Lucas! Hit it now!" I screamed at the top of my lungs.

Lucas didn't hesitate for a single second, smashing his small fist against the glowing red panel on the wall.

Within three agonizing minutes, the heavy vault doors were blown open by a tactical breach unit, and a dozen heavily armed federal agents flooded the room.

They pulled me off Justin and immediately arrested him, confirming after a quick sweep that the explosive threat was a complete bluff designed to terrify me.

I handed the true will and the master ledger over to the lead federal agent, who promised me full protection.

A month later, Justin was sentenced to life in a maximum-security federal prison without the possibility of parole for his crimes of murder, fraud, and kidnapping.

The courts fully validated Mr. Christopher’s final will, legally granting me and Lucas the entire estate, the corporate trusts, and the sprawling mansion.

We were finally safe, completely secure, and sitting comfortably in the grand living room as the rightful owners.

Smiling, I began unpacking my old, humble cardboard boxes to decorate the massive, beautiful home.

I decided to open a dusty, locked metal lockbox I had found hidden deep in Mr. Christopher's attic files.

Inside the box, carefully preserved in plastic, I found a faded hospital birth certificate belonging to Justin.

The official paper listed Mr. Christopher as the biological father, but the mother's name printed on the line below made my blood run completely cold.

It clearly and undeniably read "Helena Vance."
