Chapter 3 - A Desperate Flight

I locked the broken door as best as I could and sprinted back into the bedroom.
I knew that Justin was not making an empty threat.
I pulled a small duffel bag from the closet and threw in whatever warm clothes I could grab in a panic.
I woke Lucas up, telling him we were going on a surprise midnight adventure.
He rubbed his sleepy eyes but trusted me enough to put on his shoes without asking any questions.
I dialed Samuel’s number again, my fingers slipping on the sweaty screen of my phone.
Samuel answered on the first ring and told me to get out of the building immediately.
He gave me the address of an abandoned warehouse on the edge of the industrial district, promising he would meet me there with private security.
I grabbed my bag, held Lucas’s small hand tightly, and climbed out the bedroom window onto the rusty fire escape.
The cold autumn rain had just begun to fall, making the iron steps incredibly slippery.
As we reached the dark alleyway below, I peeked around the corner toward the front of my apartment building.
Two sleek, black SUVs with tinted windows were parked aggressively on the curb.
Four large men in dark suits were blocking the main exit, checking the faces of everyone who walked by.
I pulled Lucas back into the shadows and we hurried down the alley, splashing through the freezing puddles.
We finally reached a busy intersection and I aggressively flagged down a passing yellow taxi.
I threw the driver a fifty-dollar bill from my meager severance pay and read him the warehouse address.
The driver nodded slowly, throwing the car into gear and pulling away from the curb.

A few minutes into the ride, the driver pressed a button on his dashboard that locked all the passenger doors with a loud mechanical click.
He looked at me through the rearview mirror with a chilling smile and said that Mr. Justin sends his regards.
