Chapter 5 - Framed and Hunted

I stared at the television screens in absolute horror, unable to comprehend the nightmare unfolding before me.

Justin had somehow managed to falsify a toxicology report, claiming his father had been murdered by his long-time housekeeper.

The news anchor’s voice echoed through the tiled station, urging the public to contact authorities immediately if they spotted me.

People in the crowded terminal were already starting to glance at their phones and then up at the passing faces.

I quickly pulled the hood of my damp jacket over my head and wrapped my thick wool scarf tightly around my lower face.

I ushered Lucas toward the ticket turnstiles, keeping my head down and my posture stooped.

We managed to slip onto the first outbound train just as the doors were sliding shut.

I held Lucas in my lap, praying that the rhythmic rattling of the subway car would soothe his growing fear.

We had to reach the safe house Samuel had mentioned, because he was the only person left who knew the truth.

After a tense thirty-minute ride, we exited the train in the desolate, crumbling industrial district.

The rain was pouring in sheets as we found the address, a massive brick warehouse with boarded-up windows.

I knocked on the heavy metal side door three times, exactly as Samuel had instructed.

The heavy door creaked open slowly, pushed by the fierce wind rather than a human hand.

I stepped inside the dark cavern, calling out Samuel's name into the pitch-black void.

There was no answer, only the sound of water dripping from a leaky roof.

I pulled out my heavy flashlight and clicked the beam on, sweeping it across the concrete floor.

My heart stopped completely as the beam of light illuminated a massive pool of fresh blood near a stack of wooden crates.

Lying in the center of the crimson puddle were Samuel's wire-rimmed glasses, completely shattered and smeared with bloody fingerprints.
