Chapter 4 - The Ambush

The concussive shockwave threw us violently against the opposite wall.

Thick gray smoke instantly filled the small room, blinding my vision and burning my lungs.

Valeria coughed heavily, desperately clutching the titanium drive to her chest.

"Dante's men are making their move," Valeria yelled over the deafening ringing in my ears.

I grabbed her hand and pulled her toward the emergency service stairwell.

We sprinted down five flights of stairs, the sound of heavy boots echoing right behind us.

We burst into the underground parking garage, desperately searching for her armored vehicle.

"Over here, Adrián!" a familiar voice shouted from the shadows.

I looked up and saw my best friend, Mateo, waving frantically from behind a black SUV.

Mateo was the one who had insisted I attend this specific party tonight.

I felt a massive wave of relief and pulled Valeria toward his location.

"Get in the car, I will get us out of here," Mateo promised, opening the rear doors.

We climbed into the back seat, gasping for air as Mateo locked the doors from the driver's seat.

Instead of starting the engine, Mateo calmly pulled a suppressed pistol from his jacket.

He turned around and aimed the weapon directly at Valeria's head.

"I am truly sorry, Adrián, but Alejandro Cortés pays much better than our corporate salary," Mateo sneered.
