Chapter 8 - The Ransom

Dante practically tore the heavy paper out of my hands, his eyes burning with absolute rage.
He turned his furious glare entirely onto me, his jaw clenched so tightly it looked painful.
"Your deranged sister has my daughter again," he growled dangerously.
"I will help you get her back," I promised fiercely, ignoring the terrifying danger radiating from him.
"You are going to do exactly what she says and walk right into her trap."
Dante grabbed a spare pistol from his hidden holster and shoved it roughly into my hands.
"If you hesitate for even one second when we find her, I will kill you myself," he warned.
We ran out of the smoking mansion and jumped into a heavily armored black SUV.
Dante drove like a complete madman, swerving violently through the rainy city streets.
I checked the safety on the heavy pistol, my hands surprisingly steady despite the sheer terror in my heart.
We finally arrived at the massive, abandoned shipyard located right on the edge of the dark river.
Hundreds of rusted shipping containers created a terrifying, silent maze in the cold fog.
We crept silently between the towering metal boxes, listening closely for any sign of life.
A faint, muffled cry echoed off the wet steel walls nearby.
We rounded a sharp corner and finally saw them standing under a broken floodlight.
My twin sister, Chloe, was holding Elara firmly by the arm, looking nervously at her surroundings.
She looked significantly older, exhausted, and incredibly desperate.
"Let the child go, Chloe," I yelled loudly, stepping confidently out of the thick shadows.
Chloe gasped in pure shock, staring at me as if she had just seen a genuine ghost.
"Maya? What on earth are you doing here?" she stammered in absolute disbelief.
"You dragged me into your terrible mess, now end it," I demanded, raising the gun toward her.
Chloe shook her head frantically, fresh tears streaming quickly down her ruined makeup.
"I did not want to do this, Maya, I swear to God I had no choice!"
"Marcus paid you to do this!" Dante roared, stepping out to stand firmly beside me.
"Marcus was just a stupid pawn," Chloe cried out desperately.

"The Police Commissioner orchestrated this entire war to legally confiscate your territory, Dante."
Suddenly, dozens of blinding police spotlights flipped on, completely surrounding us in the shipping yard.
