Chapter 10 - The Dawn

I stared at my sister's lifeless body, completely numb to the chaotic war raging around me.
Dante grabbed my shoulder forcefully, pulling me back to the terrifying reality of the moment.
"I am completely out of ammunition, Maya," Dante yelled over the deafening sirens.
I looked at the heavy pistol still resting securely in my trembling hand.
Commissioner Vance was creeping aggressively around the metal container, his weapon raised to finish us off.
I did not think, I simply reacted with pure, protective instinct.
I stepped out from cover and fired two perfect shots directly into Vance's right kneecap.
He screamed in utter agony and collapsed into the muddy gravel, dropping his rifle instantly.
Dante surged forward like a dangerous predator, kicking Vance's gun far away into the dark river.
He pressed his heavy boot directly onto Vance's bleeding chest, pinning him entirely to the ground.
"It is officially over, Vance," Dante growled dangerously.
The remaining SWAT officers, seeing their corrupt boss entirely defeated, slowly lowered their weapons in confusion.
I held up the small digital recorder Chloe had given me and pressed the play button loudly.
Vance's arrogant voice echoed clearly, bragging about framing Dante and entirely funding Marcus's violent coup.
The honest police officers immediately moved forward and placed their corrupt commissioner in heavy handcuffs.
The dangerous, bloody nightmare was finally and permanently over.
Six months later, the morning sun shone brightly through the massive windows of Dante's estate.
I sat happily at the grand dining table, watching Elara color a beautiful picture of our new family.
Dante walked into the room, kissing the top of my head gently before pouring his coffee.
He had officially cleared his name, destroyed his treacherous brother's network, and left the violent underworld behind.
I was no longer a lonely woman waiting for a late bus in the freezing cold.
I had finally found a real home, a brilliant daughter, and a fiercely protective man who loved me unconditionally.
We were absolutely safe, completely happy, and finally at true peace.
Later that afternoon, I walked out to check the secure mailbox at the front gates.
Inside was a plain, black envelope with no return address whatsoever.

I opened it and found a crisp photograph of me holding Elara in that abandoned warehouse on the very first night.
Written elegantly in dark red ink on the back were the words: "You played your part perfectly, Phase Two begins tomorrow."
