Chapter 6 - Into the Dark

I pressed my back desperately against the damp stone wall of the secret tunnel.
"I am not Chloe," I whispered forcefully, staring directly at the deadly weapon in his hand.
Marcus let out a cruel, mocking laugh that echoed terribly through the narrow space.
"You can drop the innocent act now, we are entirely alone down here."
He stepped closer, the bright beam of his flashlight illuminating his twisted, arrogant smile.
"I paid you two million dollars to kidnap that brat and disappear permanently."
"Instead, you bring her right back to my brother's front door like a complete idiot."
My mind raced frantically as I finally pieced his entire horrific betrayal together.
Marcus had paid my sister to kidnap his own niece so he could frame a rival cartel and usurp his brother's throne.
I knew that if I told him I was actually Maya, he would kill me instantly for knowing his terrible secret.
"Things got very complicated on the street," I lied smoothly, trying to perfectly mimic my sister's confident tone.
"The drop-off location was heavily compromised, so I had to improvise to stay alive."
Marcus frowned slightly, clearly annoyed but momentarily convinced by my desperate bluff.
"It does not matter anymore, because my hired mercenaries are slaughtering Dante's men right now."
He grabbed my arm roughly and yanked me deeper down the long, winding tunnel.
"You are going to help me finish the job, or I will put a bullet in your skull right now."
We walked in tense silence for several minutes until we reached a heavy steel door.
Marcus reached out to punch a code into the digital keypad on the wall.
Suddenly, a loud metallic creak echoed directly above our heads.
A hidden ceiling hatch swung open, and Dante dropped gracefully down onto the stone floor like a lethal shadow.
His expensive suit was covered in dirt and blood, but his dark eyes were completely furious.
"Hello, brother," Dante whispered lethally, raising his silver pistol.

Marcus instantly panicked, violently wrapping his arm around my neck and pressing his gun hard against my temple.
"Drop the gun, Dante, or I paint this tunnel with her brains," Marcus threatened frantically.
