Chapter 1 - The Shadow of the Don

Heavy footsteps echoed fiercely through the damp warehouse as blinding flashlight beams cut through the absolute darkness.
I instinctively pulled the little girl tighter against my chest to shield her from the harsh glare.
Her small, trembling body was still burning with a dangerous fever.
More than a dozen men dressed in black tactical gear swarmed the abandoned building in seconds.
They moved with the terrifying precision of a highly trained military unit.
A towering figure stepped through the rusted loading doors, wearing a perfectly tailored charcoal suit that looked entirely out of place in the dirt.
The other armed men immediately stepped back to clear a path for him.
His dark, cold eyes locked onto me, practically freezing the remaining blood in my veins.
The little girl stirred in my arms, weakly lifting her head from my shoulder.
"Daddy," she whimpered softly, reaching one tiny hand toward the terrifying man.
The man's frozen expression completely shattered as he rushed forward and dropped to his knees in the dirt.
He gently pulled his daughter from my trembling arms and wrapped his large coat around her fragile body.
I let out a heavy breath I did not even know I was holding.
"I found her hiding behind those boxes," I explained nervously, trying to push myself up from the concrete floor.
"She has a terrible fever, and she really needs a doctor."
The man stood up slowly, holding his daughter safely against his broad chest.
He did not offer me a single word of gratitude or a warm smile.
Instead, he glared down at me with a look of pure, unadulterated murder.
"You really thought you could kidnap my daughter and demand a ransom without facing consequences?" he asked in a low, dangerous growl.
My heart slammed violently against my ribs as sheer panic washed over me.
"I did not kidnap anyone, I just missed my bus last night!" I pleaded desperately.
He turned his back on me and started walking calmly toward the fleet of black SUVs.
"Execute her and burn this building to the ground," he ordered his men casually.
May you like
Three men raised their suppressed assault rifles and aimed them directly at my head.
Before they could pull their triggers, the little girl screamed at the top of her lungs.
