Chapter 3 - The Safe House

I didn't drive to my estate. Jessica had the security codes, and I knew she would send the police there. Instead, I called Marcus, my private investigator.

"Marcus, it’s worse than we thought," I explained over the Bluetooth connection as the truck tore down the highway. "She forged a surrogacy contract. She’s coming for the twins."

"Don't panic," Marcus said, his voice calm and professional. "Drive to the address I’m texting you right now. It’s a secure safe house owned by my firm. Jessica can’t touch you there. I’m bringing in a federal fraud attorney."

An hour later, we pulled into a secluded, gated property deep in the Texas Hill Country.

Once we were inside the warm, fully stocked house, the adrenaline faded, leaving only exhaustion. I watched Sarah gently lay the sleeping twins down in a massive, soft bed. She looked so fragile, yet she had survived a war I hadn't even realized was happening.

She walked out into the living room and stood by the fireplace, wrapping her arms around herself.

"I didn't cheat on you, David," she whispered, her voice cracking. "I swear to God. I never touched another man."

I crossed the room and fell to my knees in front of her. Tears spilled down my face. "I know, Sarah. I know everything. I saw the evidence of what she did. I am so deeply, profoundly sorry. I should have believed you. I will spend the rest of my life making this right, even if it means dying to protect you and those babies."

She looked down at me, and for the first time in a year, she reached out and gently touched my face.
