Chapter 1 - The Forged Signature

The gravel crunched under Jessica’s expensive designer heels as she strutted toward us. The two lawyers flanked her like bodyguards.
"Well, well," Jessica sneered, looking down at Sarah and the twins. "A beautiful family reunion. Too bad it’s illegal."
I stepped in front of Sarah, shielding her and my children. "What are you talking about, Jessica? It’s over. I know everything. The PI uncovered the doctored photos, the offshore accounts, the blocked calls. You’re done."
Jessica didn’t flinch. She just smiled—a cold, reptilian grin. She snapped her fingers, and one of the lawyers handed me a thick manila envelope.
"Open it, David," she purred.
I tore the envelope open. Inside were legal documents with the state seal of Texas. As I read the bold print, the blood drained from my face. It was a formal surrogacy and custody surrender agreement.
"What is this?" I demanded.
"It’s a legally binding contract," Jessica said smoothly. "Signed by Sarah three months ago when she was starving in a clinic. She agreed to act as a surrogate for us. In exchange for fifty thousand dollars—which she conveniently already 'spent'—she signed over full maternal rights to me. I am legally the mother of those twins."

I looked at Sarah. She was trembling, shaking her head frantically. "David, no! I never signed anything! A woman came to the free clinic pretending to be a social worker helping with Medicaid forms! I just signed a medical release!"
"It doesn't matter what you thought you signed," Jessica’s lawyer stated coldly. "The signatures are verified. If you attempt to leave with those children, we will have you arrested for kidnapping. Give us the babies, Sarah."
