Chapter 5 - The Bank Manager's Secret

The luxurious apartment fell into a stunned, heavy silence.
Vanessa slid down the kitchen cabinets until she was sitting on the floor, weeping uncontrollably.
"It was self-defense, but it looked like murder on the security cameras," Vanessa sobbed loudly.
She explained how Ryan had somehow obtained the footage and used it to utterly destroy her life.
He forced her to approve fraudulent loans, alter banking records, and hide his massive financial tracks.
"He told me that if I didn't transfer the offshore money yesterday, he would send the tape to the police," she confessed.
I looked at Elena, realizing that Ryan was a much darker monster than we had ever imagined.
"Where is the blackmail material kept?" Elena demanded, stepping closer to the broken woman.
Vanessa pointed a trembling finger toward her designer handbag on the sofa.
"He keeps all his leverage in a private lockbox at a secure storage facility on the edge of town," she explained.
"He gave me the spare key last week so I could drop off the final forged documents."
I walked over to the handbag, reached inside, and pulled out a heavy brass key with a serial number.
We had the location, the key, and the perfect opportunity to destroy his entire empire of lies.
"You are coming with us, Vanessa," I ordered, pulling her up from the floor.
She nodded weakly, throwing a heavy coat over her silk robe without arguing.
The three of us drove into the desolate industrial district, guided only by the dim streetlights.
We arrived at a massive, windowless concrete building surrounded by barbed wire fencing.
Vanessa used her authorized access code to open the heavy steel security gates.
We walked down a long, echoing corridor until we reached unit number seven.
I slid the brass key into the lock and turned it, feeling the heavy mechanism click open.
I pulled the metal door up, and the motion sensor lights flickered on inside the dusty unit.
The room was filled with stacks of cash, fake passports, and dozens of classified blackmail files.
But the most terrifying discovery was sitting right in the center of a metal desk.

It was an official, government-issued death certificate bearing Elena's full name.
The cause of death was listed as a tragic car accident, and the document was dated for tomorrow.
