Chapter 1 - The Stranger In My Bed

The rain poured heavily as I unlocked the front door of my suburban home.
I had returned a day early from my corporate retreat, eager to surprise my loving husband, Ryan.
The house was eerily quiet, save for a strange rustling sound coming from our master bedroom upstairs.
I walked softly up the carpeted steps, my heart pounding nervously in my chest.
I pushed open the bedroom door and dropped my suitcase in pure shock.
Ryan was tangled in our expensive sheets with a beautiful brunette woman.
They both froze as they saw me standing paralyzed in the doorway.
I expected the strange woman to scream, cry, or desperately hide her face.
Instead, she calmly sat up and reached for her leather handbag on the nightstand.
She pulled out a folded piece of paper and handed it directly to me.
"We were never divorced," she said with a chilling, absolute calmness.
"He lied to both of us."
I stared at the official state marriage certificate bearing her name, Elena, and his.
Ryan panicked and lunged forward to snatch the document from my trembling hands.
I raised my hand and slapped him across the face as hard as I possibly could.
His eyes flashed with sudden violence, and he aggressively seized my wrist.
Before he could twist my arm, Elena swung her heavy designer purse and struck him hard across the jaw.
The impact sent him stumbling backward until he collapsed onto the mattress.
We stood over him, suddenly united in our furious betrayal.
Elena pulled a stack of bank statements from her bag and threw them at his chest.
Together, we looked at the papers showing he had used both of our names to illegally borrow money against my house.
I immediately dialed 911 while Elena stood firmly in front of the bedroom door to block his escape.
Ryan got on his knees and desperately begged us to forgive his terrible mistakes.
Instead, we stood in cold silence and watched the police officers lead him away in steel handcuffs.
The lead officer asked me to fetch his identification from his hidden floor safe in the closet.
I entered his passcode and pulled open the heavy metal door.

Underneath his passport, I found a brand new life insurance policy taken out in my name.
The guaranteed payout was for two million dollars, and the signature at the bottom showed that my scheduled death was supposed to happen tomorrow.
