Chapter 3 - The Interrogation

Elena insisted on driving me to the police precinct in her car.
I was completely terrified, realizing that Ryan had planned every single detail of my downfall.
When we arrived, Elena immediately made a phone call to a high-powered defense attorney she knew.
The lawyer, a sharp woman named Sarah, met us in the waiting room just minutes later.
Sarah marched us directly into the interrogation room where Detective Harris was holding Ryan.
Ryan looked up, playing the role of a terrified, abused husband perfectly.
He had even managed to squeeze out a few fake tears for the observing officers.
"Chloe made me take out those loans because of her gambling debts," Ryan lied smoothly.
I almost lunged across the metal table to strangle him, but Sarah held me back.
"My client has absolutely zero history of gambling, and you know it," Sarah fired back at him.
Ryan smiled a sickening, arrogant smile when the detective briefly looked away.
"The money is already in a joint account with her name on it," Ryan claimed confidently.
Sarah opened her briefcase and pulled out a fresh banking report she had rushed to acquire.
She slammed the financial document down right in front of Ryan's smug face.
"You might want to check your facts, Ryan," Sarah stated coldly.
"That loan money was transferred out of the joint account yesterday afternoon."
Ryan's fake smile vanished instantly, replaced by genuine confusion and rising panic.
"The funds were wired to an untraceable offshore account," Sarah continued.
The detective immediately demanded to know where Ryan had sent the stolen cash.
Ryan looked genuinely terrified as he realized he had lost control of his own scam.
"I didn't transfer that money," Ryan whispered, his voice trembling with real fear.
"If you didn't move the millions, Ryan, then who did?" Detective Harris demanded.

Ryan looked at me, then at Elena, before uttering a name that made my blood run cold.
"It had to be Vanessa," he confessed.
