Chapter 2 - The House Of Lies

I handed the chilling life insurance policy to the police officer.

My hands shook violently as I realized how close I had come to being murdered in my own home.

Elena stood beside me, her expression hardening as she read the terrifying document.

The officer placed the papers into an evidence bag and radioed for a detective.

Within an hour, our quiet suburban living room was swarming with investigators.

Detective Harris, a stern man with tired eyes, sat us down at the kitchen table.

He placed the fraudulent bank loan documents directly in front of me.

"I need you to look very closely at these signatures, Chloe," he instructed.

I squinted at the bottom of the loan agreement that had borrowed heavily against my property.

My signature was there, perfectly replicated in dark blue ink.

"I never signed this," I stated firmly, looking the detective in the eye.

Detective Harris sighed heavily and pulled a forensic report from his folder.

"Our preliminary scan shows that this ink matches the pen you use in your home office," he said.

He leaned forward, his gaze turning suspicious and cold.

"Furthermore, the notary who stamped this document claims you were present," he added.

I felt the room spin as the gravity of his words crashed down on me.

Ryan had not only forged my name, but he had legally framed me for the entire fraudulent scheme.

Elena immediately slammed her hand on the table in my defense.

"Are you honestly accusing the victim of orchestrating her own financial ruin?" she demanded.

Detective Harris stood up and adjusted his utility belt.

"I am simply stating that the bank legally considers Chloe the primary borrower," he replied.

He looked at me with a warning glint in his eye.

"If Ryan claims you forced him to do this, you could be facing twenty years in federal prison."
