Chapter 8 - The Dark Water

My mother had not been thrown into the water to drown.

She had intentionally thrown herself overboard to hide under the rear deck when Julian drew his gun.

She was shivering and soaking wet, but her eyes burned with absolute, unbroken defiance.

She grabbed a heavy metal fire extinguisher from the emergency box on the back rail.

With a desperate, furious cry, she swung the metal cylinder and smashed it directly into the back of Julian's knees.

Julian howled in excruciating pain and collapsed onto the wooden deck, dropping the hunting rifle.

I instantly kicked the rifle off the boat and pinned my brother face-down against the floorboards.

Miller pulled a gasping, terrified Chloe out of the cold lake and handcuffed her to the metal railing.

I wrapped my arms tightly around my mother, sobbing uncontrollably into her wet shoulder.

"You are safe now, Mom," I cried, holding her fragile, bruised body as tightly as I could.

"I told you I would never let them hurt you again."

Miller radioed for federal backup, and within twenty minutes, local and state police swarmed the lake.

They dragged Julian and Chloe off the boat, reading them their rights under the glaring spotlight of a police helicopter.

Paramedics wrapped my mother in thick thermal blankets and loaded her into a warm ambulance.

I sat beside her, holding her hand as we finally drove away from the nightmare at the lake.

I felt an overwhelming sense of relief, knowing that the physical danger was permanently over.

When we arrived at the hospital, the emergency room doctors immediately took her back for a full examination.

I waited in the hallway, drinking terrible coffee and waiting for clearance to take her home.

The lead doctor walked out with a very grim expression and asked me to step into a private room.

He closed the door and told me they had found something deeply disturbing in her blood work.
