Chapter 7 - The Lake Cabin

The deafening sound of the gunshot echoed violently across the black water of the lake.
I did not wait for Miller to formulate a careful tactical plan.
I ran straight past the dark cabin and sprinted down the wooden planks of the old dock.
Julian's motorized pontoon boat was floating about two hundred yards away from the shore.
I saw the silhouette of my brother standing on the deck, holding a long hunting rifle.
Chloe was standing beside him, holding a heavy metal chain attached to concrete cinder blocks.
My mother was nowhere to be seen on the flat deck of the boat.
"They threw her in!" I screamed, feeling a wave of absolute terror crush my chest.
Miller ran up behind me and pointed to a neighbor's speedboat tied to the adjacent dock.
We jumped into the speedboat, and Miller expertly hotwired the ignition in seconds.
The powerful engine roared to life, and we tore across the dark water toward the pontoon.
Julian heard our rapid approach and turned his rifle toward us.
He fired twice, the heavy bullets shattering the windshield of our speedboat and showering us with glass.
Miller drew his service pistol and returned fire, forcing Julian to duck behind the steering console.
I steered the speedboat directly into the side of the pontoon with a deafening crash.
The violent impact threw Chloe into the dark water, and she screamed as the heavy chains dragged her under.
I leaped across the gap onto the deck of the pontoon to find my brother.

Julian stood up and pointed the hot barrel of the rifle directly at my face.
Before he could pull the trigger, a dripping wet figure climbed over the back rail of the boat.
