Chapter 6 - The Jail Cell Trap

"Get out of the house!" Miller yelled, grabbing my shoulder and pushing me toward the exit.
We sprinted across the front lawn just as the entire first floor of the house exploded in a massive fireball.
The powerful shockwave knocked us flat onto the wet, muddy grass.
Julian had left a massive gas leak and an explosive timer to destroy all remaining evidence of his abuse.
If Miller had not rescued me from the police cruiser, I would have been locked in a cell while my mother was lost forever.
I stood up, wiping dark soot and mud from my face as the house burned fiercely behind us.
"He thinks he won," I whispered, staring directly at the roaring flames.
"He doesn't know that I slipped a microscopic GPS tracker into his coat pocket when I hit him with the vase."
Miller opened his secure laptop on the hood of his SUV and synced it to my tracking frequency.
A red blinking dot appeared immediately on the digital map.
"They are not at a psychiatric hospital," Miller noted, tracing the route with his finger.
"They are heading north toward the abandoned lake cabin your mother supposedly sold."
Julian was taking her to the deepest, most isolated body of water in the entire county.
He was not planning to hide her in a medical facility at all.
He was planning to make her disappear permanently.
We jumped into the SUV and sped onto the northbound highway, pushing the engine to its absolute limit.
The drive took less than an hour, but every passing minute felt like a lifetime of agonizing fear.
We finally arrived at the muddy dirt road leading to the secluded lake property.

The cabin was completely dark, but Chloe's luxury car was parked near the wooden dock.
We crept toward the cabin, ready to breach the door, when a gunshot rang out from the middle of the lake.
