Chapter 5 - The Corrupt Doctor

The massive impact threw me violently against the metal partition of the cruiser.

The engine smoked as the car settled deep into the thick mud of the roadside ditch.

The trooper in the driver's seat groaned and slumped over the steering wheel, completely unconscious.

I kicked the reinforced window with both boots, but the safety glass refused to break.

Suddenly, the back door of the cruiser was pried open from the outside with a heavy steel crowbar.

A man wearing a dark suit and a badge around his neck reached in and unlocked my handcuffs with a master key.

"I am Chief Investigator Miller with the State Attorney's Office," the man said urgently.

"Judge Thorne realized the local police dispatch was compromised and sent me to intercept you."

I crawled out of the wrecked car, my heart pounding with renewed hope.

"We have to go back for my mother," I told him, rubbing my severely bruised wrists.

Miller nodded and led me to his unmarked black SUV hidden in the shadows of the trees.

We sped back toward Julian's neighborhood with the headlights completely turned off to avoid detection.

When we arrived at the house, the driveway was entirely empty.

Julian's car was gone, and the front door was left wide open to the night air.

We drew our weapons and cleared the house room by room.

The house was completely abandoned, and all the financial documents had been cleared from Julian's desk.

Miller found a crumpled receipt on the kitchen counter and handed it to me.

It was a payment confirmation for a private psychiatric transport van, signed by a corrupt local doctor.

Julian had legally committed my mother to an undisclosed psychiatric facility to silence her forever.

Then a loud, rapid ticking sound echoed from behind the basement door.
