Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

The emergency backup generators kicked on, bathing the hospital hallway in a dim red glow.
I did not panic, because I was an Assistant Attorney General, and I possessed the absolute authority to end this.
I used my secure phone to immediately summon a heavily armed federal FBI strike team to the hospital.
When the cartel members breached the emergency room doors, they walked directly into a massive federal ambush.
The heavily armed criminals were entirely outgunned, and the FBI neutralized the threat without a single casualty.
Over the next few months, justice was served with absolute, unforgiving precision.
Julian and Chloe were convicted of elder abuse, fraud, and conspiracy to commit murder.
They were both sentenced to forty years in a maximum-security federal penitentiary without the possibility of parole.
I used my legal authority to completely void every forged document and illegal transfer they had executed.
My mother's stolen money was fully restored to her rightful accounts, and the lake cabin was returned to her name.
A year later, my mother was living safely with me in my secure, beautiful apartment in the city.
Her physical bruises had completely healed, and the toxic drugs were entirely flushed from her system.
We spent our weekends baking cookies, laughing, and enjoying the peaceful, happy life she always deserved.
The horrific nightmare was finally over, and our family was completely safe at last.
One evening, the doorbell rang, and I opened the front door to find a blank white envelope resting on the mat.
I carefully opened the envelope and pulled out a pristine photograph of my father, a man who supposedly died twenty years ago.

Written on the back of the photo in fresh red ink were the words, "Julian was just following my orders."
Then, the burner phone hidden inside my coat pocket began to ring with an unknown international number.
