Chapter 2 - The Stolen Evidence

I instinctively stepped in front of my mother to shield her from his towering presence.
Julian raised the heavy wrench, his knuckles turning completely white under the harsh bathroom light.
"Give me that phone, Elena," he commanded with a terrifying calmness.
"If you hurt us, you will spend the rest of your life in a state penitentiary," I warned him firmly.
Chloe suddenly appeared in the hallway directly behind him.
She was holding a small black device with a rapidly blinking red light.
"She cannot call anyone, Julian," Chloe smiled wickedly.
"I activated the cellular jammer as soon as she locked the bathroom door."
My heart sank as I looked down at my phone screen.
The signal bars were completely gone, replaced by a bold warning of no service.
My call to Judge Thorne had been disconnected before he could approve the emergency protective order.
Julian grabbed my wrist forcefully and snatched the phone directly from my hand.
He threw it onto the hard tile floor and smashed it violently with the steel wrench.
The glass screen shattered into a hundred pieces, completely destroying my primary device.
"Now we are going to have a little family meeting," Julian said, grabbing my arm.
He dragged me out of the bathroom and pushed me aggressively down the stairs into the living room.
Chloe followed close behind, dragging my crying mother by her fragile arm.
They shoved us onto the living room sofa and securely locked the front door.

Julian smiled triumphantly and told us that we were never leaving this house again.
Then the shattered phone in my pocket suddenly vibrated and began to ring loudly.
