Chapter 8 - The Wire

Lucas stood alone in the dark, pouring rain at the entrance of the abandoned industrial shipyard.

He held the red folder containing the forged documents tightly against his chest, completely soaked by the freezing storm.

He had ignored the arriving FBI agents at the law firm, choosing to risk his own life to save his mother from the cartel.

He walked slowly toward a massive, rusted warehouse illuminated by the headlights of three black, armored SUVs.

Marcus and Gwendolyn were waiting for him in the center of the vast, empty room, surrounded by six heavily armed mercenaries.

Florence was tied securely to a wooden chair, weeping silently as Sarah lay unconscious and bleeding on the concrete floor.

"Hand over the documents right now, Lucas, and we might make this completely painless," Marcus demanded, raising his weapon.

Lucas did not hand the folder over immediately; instead, he took a slow, deliberate step forward into the bright headlights.

"I just want to know why you tortured her, Gwendolyn," Lucas asked, his voice echoing loudly in the cavernous warehouse.

"Why did you pour freezing ice water on a defenseless old woman when you already had the fake signatures you needed?"

Gwendolyn laughed, a harsh, evil sound that sent a terrifying shiver directly down Lucas's spine.

"Because I absolutely hated playing the role of your loving, pathetic wife for five miserable years," Gwendolyn confessed proudly.

"I enjoyed watching your mother suffer, and I poisoned her simply because I grew tired of waiting for her to die naturally."

Marcus smiled proudly, completely confirming his own involvement in the brutal attempted murder and the massive corporate fraud.

"We played you perfectly, Lucas, and now we are going to walk away with forty million dollars," Marcus boasted to the room.

What neither of them realized was that Lucas had secretly taped a high-tech federal listening device directly to his chest.

Every single word of their horrific, arrogant confession had been broadcast clearly to the FBI tactical team waiting outside.

"I think you are entirely wrong about that, Marcus," Lucas said softly, slowly dropping the red folder onto the wet concrete.

Marcus frowned in confusion, realizing far too late that the situation was a meticulously planned federal trap.

Suddenly, the massive steel doors of the warehouse violently exploded inward with a deafening, terrifying crash.
