Chapter 3 - The Ultimate Betrayal

Lucas stared at the deadly weapon in absolute shock as his entire world completely shattered.
Marcus had been the best man at his wedding and the godfather to his future children.
"I am truly sorry it had to end this way, Lucas," Marcus said, though his eyes showed zero remorse.
"You and Gwendolyn have been planning this massive theft together since the very beginning," Lucas realized aloud.
Gwendolyn stepped forward, her expensive high heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor.
"Marcus and I have actually been legally married for six years, you pathetic fool," Gwendolyn confessed proudly.
She explained that her entire marriage to Lucas was a meticulously crafted scam designed to legally access Florence's estate.
They had forged the marriage certificate and manipulated every single aspect of Lucas's miserable life.
"Hand over the phone right now, and we might make your death relatively painless," Marcus demanded, raising the gun higher.
Lucas knew that if he surrendered the phone, both he and his mother would be murdered instantly.
He slowly reached into his pocket, pretending to comply with the lawyer's lethal demand.
Instead of grabbing the phone, Lucas's fingers wrapped tightly around a heavy brass paperweight sitting on the desk.
With a sudden burst of adrenaline, Lucas hurled the heavy brass object directly at the room's single lightbulb.
The glass shattered instantly, plunging the small office into total, disorienting darkness.
Marcus fired a suppressed shot in a blind panic, the bullet missing Lucas's head by mere inches.
Lucas dove aggressively to the floor, tackling Marcus by the knees and sending the lawyer crashing into a heavy bookshelf.
He scrambled out of the study and sprinted up the wooden stairs as fast as his legs could carry him.
He burst into the master bedroom, locking the heavy oak door securely behind him.
Dr. Evans looked up in pure terror as Lucas began frantically unplugging Florence's medical equipment.
"We have to leave this house right now, or we are all going to die," Lucas screamed.

He lifted his frail mother into his strong arms, completely ignoring her weak protests.
Suddenly, a massive, deafening shotgun blast blew the bedroom door entirely off its metal hinges.
