Chapter 4 - The Desperate Escape

The heavy wooden door splintered violently, raining sharp debris all over the plush bedroom carpet.

Marcus stepped through the destroyed doorway, holding a massive tactical shotgun he had retrieved from the hallway closet.

Dr. Evans bravely stepped in front of Lucas, raising his hands in a desperate plea for peace.

Marcus did not hesitate for a single second, striking the elderly doctor across the face with the heavy stock of the weapon.

The doctor collapsed unconsciously to the floor, leaving Lucas entirely defenseless with his mother in his arms.

"There is absolutely nowhere left to run, Lucas," Marcus sneered, racking another shell into the chamber.

Lucas backed slowly toward the large bay window overlooking the steep, sloping roof of the backyard patio.

"You will never get away with this, the police will investigate," Lucas warned him fiercely.

Marcus laughed aloud, casually pointing the barrel of the shotgun directly at Florence's chest.

"The local police chief is already on my payroll, and he will rule this a tragic murder-suicide," Marcus explained confidently.

Lucas realized he had exactly one desperate chance to save his mother's life.

He aggressively kicked a heavy wooden dresser directly into Marcus's path, causing the lawyer to stumble backward.

Without a moment of hesitation, Lucas threw his entire body weight against the large glass window.

The glass shattered into a million pieces as Lucas and his mother tumbled out onto the sloping shingled roof.

They slid rapidly down the wet shingles, plummeting into the thick, soft hedgerows lining the backyard garden.

Lucas ignored the agonizing pain in his shoulder, quickly scooping his mother up and sprinting toward his parked car.

He threw her gently into the passenger seat and hotwired the ignition, bypassing the electronic lock system.

The engine roared to life just as Marcus rushed out of the back door, firing wildly at the escaping vehicle.

Lucas slammed his foot on the gas pedal, tearing out of the driveway and speeding down the dark suburban street.

He checked his rearview mirror, relieved to see the violent nightmare fading into the distance.

As he approached a steep, winding hill leading out of the neighborhood, he pressed his foot firmly against the brake pedal.

The pedal slammed completely to the floor without providing any resistance whatsoever.

"The brake lines have been completely cut," Lucas whispered in sheer terror as the car accelerated wildly down the steep mountain road.
