Chapter 6 - The Safehouse

The heavily armored SUV pulled into a dark, abandoned underground parking garage beneath a decaying industrial warehouse.
Sarah led Lucas and Florence through a labyrinth of concrete corridors until they reached a heavily fortified steel door.
She punched a complex code into the biometric keypad, allowing them entry into a highly advanced, fully stocked safehouse.
Lucas gently laid his exhausted mother on a comfortable medical cot, wrapping her warmly in thick thermal blankets.
He turned to Sarah, his face pale as he processed the terrifying reality of the international cartel assassins.
"If the cartel already bought the mining rights, they need me entirely out of the picture to legalize the transfer," Lucas deduced correctly.
Sarah nodded grimly, placing several loaded tactical weapons onto the metal table in the center of the room.
"Marcus forged your signature on a master power of attorney document, granting him total control over Florence's estate," Sarah explained.
"As long as that forged document exists in the county records, the cartel legally owns the property."
Lucas realized that hiding in this underground bunker would only delay their inevitable, violent execution.
He needed to go strictly on the offensive and completely destroy the fraudulent legal foundation of their massive theft.
"Where is the original forged document currently being held?" Lucas asked, his voice filled with newfound, lethal determination.
Sarah pulled up a digital blueprint on her secure laptop, pointing to a heavily guarded high-rise building downtown.
"It is locked inside a biometric vault on the top floor of Marcus's private law firm," Sarah stated, adjusting her glasses.
Lucas picked up a heavy, loaded pistol from the table, checking the magazine with practiced, deliberate efficiency.
"Then I am going to break into his law firm tonight and steal the original forgery right out from under his nose," Lucas declared.
Sarah tried to argue against the suicidal plan, warning him about the state-of-the-art laser security system.
Lucas simply shook his head, refusing to let his mother live the rest of her life in constant, suffocating fear.
He left Florence under Sarah's heavily armed protection and drove a stolen motorcycle toward the glittering downtown skyline.
He arrived at the towering glass skyscraper just after midnight, using a magnetic grappling hook to bypass the ground floor security.
He successfully climbed the elevator shaft, bypassing the laser grids, and finally reached the massive titanium door of the main vault.
He used a thermal cutting torch to melt through the complex locking mechanism, pushing the heavy door open in total silence.
He quickly located the red folder containing the forged power of attorney documents and shoved it into his backpack.

Suddenly, the lights inside the vault flickered on, completely blinding him in the small, enclosed space.
The heavy titanium door slammed shut automatically, locking him securely inside a vault rapidly filling with toxic, poisonous gas.
