Chapter 2 - The Stolen Estate

Dr. Evans carefully sealed the deadly vial of paralytics inside a secure plastic evidence bag.

He looked at Lucas with an expression of profound sorrow and deep, unsettling concern.

"We need to call the police immediately, Lucas," the terrified doctor insisted.

Lucas shook his head slowly, his brilliant mind racing with a hundred different terrifying thoughts.

"If we call the police right now, she will simply claim it was a terrible pharmacy mix-up," Lucas explained quietly.

He knew Gwendolyn was incredibly manipulative and could easily charm a gullible local detective.

He needed absolutely undeniable proof of her underlying financial motive for attempting to murder his mother.

Lucas asked Dr. Evans to stay in the locked bedroom and closely monitor his mother's frail vitals.

He quietly slipped out into the dark hallway and crept silently downstairs to the home office.

Gwendolyn was sitting casually at the kitchen island, loudly complaining on her cell phone to an unknown caller.

Lucas sneaked into her private study and opened the bottom drawer of her heavy, antique oak desk.

He expertly picked the cheap, flimsy lock on her hidden metal safe using a bent paperclip.

Inside the dark safe, he found a thick stack of legal documents tied tightly with a red silk ribbon.

He carefully unfolded the heavy parchment paper and read the bold, intimidating corporate heading.

It was a highly classified geological survey report for Florence's abandoned childhood farm in rural Texas.

Lucas had always believed that isolated piece of desert land was completely worthless.

According to this official corporate document, the land sat directly on top of the largest untapped lithium deposit in the country.

A major international tech conglomerate had officially offered to buy the barren property for forty million dollars.

Gwendolyn was slowly poisoning Florence to inherit the massive fortune before the tech company announced the lucrative deal publicly.

Lucas took clear, detailed photographs of every single page using his smartphone's camera.

As he closed the metal safe, he heard the floorboards creaking ominously right behind his back.

He spun around to see Gwendolyn standing in the doorway with a cruel, mocking smile on her face.

She was not standing there alone.

Standing right beside her was Marcus, Lucas's trusted corporate lawyer and lifelong best friend.

"I told you he was getting far too suspicious, Marcus," Gwendolyn laughed with a dark, evil tone.

Marcus stepped into the small room, smoothly pulling a suppressed pistol from his tailored suit jacket.
