Chapter 8 - Trial by Fire

My mother stood perfectly still, looking at us with cold, completely emotionless eyes as the flames roared around her.
She had just executed Victor without a single ounce of hesitation or remorse.
"You really are alive," my father whispered, coughing violently as the toxic smoke filled his fragile lungs.
She did not answer him, simply tossing the empty pistol into the blazing fire and turning her back on us.
She walked casually toward a secret, heavily reinforced escape hatch located in the floor of the control room.
"Wait!" I shouted, dragging my father toward the control room to follow her out of the burning building.
She climbed down the escape ladder and aggressively slammed the heavy steel hatch shut, locking it firmly from the outside.
She had completely abandoned us to die in the flames, proving she was entirely devoid of any maternal love.
The massive wooden roof beams began to groan dangerously under the intense heat of the escalating fire.
I remembered a crucial detail about this specific naval shipyard from when I aggressively purchased the surrounding real estate years ago.
There was an old, forgotten subterranean drainage tunnel located directly beneath the main generator room.
I hoisted my father onto my shoulder and sprinted blindly through the thick, choking smoke.
We crashed through the doors of the generator room just as the main warehouse roof violently collapsed behind us.
I found the rusted iron grate, kicked it open with all my remaining strength, and dragged us down into the damp darkness.
We crawled through the muddy, freezing water for what felt like hours until we finally reached the edge of the harbor.
We collapsed onto the rocky shoreline, gasping desperately for the cool, fresh night air.
My father grabbed my hand, weeping openly as he finally realized the immense depth of his past failures.
"You saved my life after everything I did to you," he cried, begging for my ultimate forgiveness.
I nodded slowly, letting the cold rain wash the soot from my face, but my heart remained entirely focused on the mission.

My encrypted phone miraculously buzzed in my pocket, displaying a terrifying new message from my treacherous mother.
"I took your sister from the hospital, so you better bring my money to the private airstrip if you want her back."
