Chapter 1 - The Midnight Call

I stared at the glowing screen of my phone as it vibrated against the dark mahogany nightstand.

It was my sister, Emily.

We had not spoken a single word since I walked out of our father's retirement dinner exactly seven days ago.

I remembered the cold sneer on my uncle's face and the bitter dismissal in my father's voice.

I almost let the call go straight to voicemail.

But something deep inside my gut told me this was not a simple social check-in.

I swiped the green button and brought the phone slowly to my ear.

"Where are you?" Emily whispered, her voice trembling so violently I could barely recognize it.

I remained completely silent, waiting for her to explain her sudden midnight panic.

"Please," she begged, choking back a heavy, desperate sob.

"You need to call Dad right now."

"Something terrible happened, and they are completely losing it."

I looked out at the glittering city lights from the massive windows of my penthouse apartment.

I thought back to the small, wrapped box I had left on the restaurant table before I walked away.

It was a gift that was supposed to secure my father's entire financial future for the rest of his life.

"What exactly happened, Emily?" I finally asked, my voice remaining calm and completely detached.

"The federal authorities just raided Uncle Rick's house."

"They froze all of Dad's retirement accounts and seized our corporate assets."

"The family business is completely gone."

I closed my eyes and took a slow, measured breath.

I had secretly bought the family's failing company three years ago through a blind trust just to keep my father employed.

When he told me to leave the dinner, I made one simple phone call to my wealth manager.

I dissolved the protective trust and completely withdrew my silent financial backing.

"I warned him that it would be the last time he ever saw me," I replied softly.

"Ethan, please, you do not understand the whole story," Emily cried out in sheer terror.

"Uncle Rick took all the remaining money and disappeared into thin air."

"Dad finally opened the gift you left on the table after the police showed up."

"When he realized what was inside that box, he collapsed onto the hardwood floor."

May you like

"He had a massive heart attack right there in the dining room."

"The doctors do not think he is going to make it through the night."
