Chapter 7 - Blood and Betrayal

I froze in my tracks, staring down the barrel of the gun held by my own father.

"Put the weapon down, Dad," I commanded, my voice echoing loudly through the damp, empty warehouse.

My father shook his head, tears streaming freely down his pale, exhausted face.

"I am so sorry, Ethan," he choked out, his hands shaking violently under the weight of the heavy pistol.

"Victor told me that if I did not kill you right here, he would torture Emily to death."

I realized in that terrible moment that my father was just a broken pawn in a much larger, deadlier game.

I took a slow, deliberate step forward, completely ignoring the deadly weapon aimed at my heart.

"You are not a murderer, and Victor is going to kill us all anyway," I reasoned calmly.

I reached out and gently placed my hand over the hot metal barrel of his gun.

He let out a loud, agonizing sob and completely collapsed into my arms, dropping the weapon to the concrete floor.

Suddenly, massive steel blast doors slammed shut across every single exit in the warehouse.

The harsh, metallic voice of Victor blasted through the overhead loudspeaker system.

"How incredibly touching, but completely useless," Victor mocked from his secure, hidden control room.

Bright orange flames violently erupted along the perimeter of the warehouse walls, instantly trapping us in a circle of fire.

Victor had deliberately drenched the entire building in highly flammable aviation fuel before we even arrived.

"Burn in hell, you pathetic fools," Victor laughed as the toxic black smoke began to fill the massive room.

I grabbed my coughing father and desperately searched for a way out of the blazing inferno.

Through the thick smoke, a tall silhouette stepped smoothly out of the hidden control room.

The mysterious figure raised a silenced pistol and shot Victor directly in the back of the head.

The figure stepped into the light, revealing the unmistakable, perfectly aged face of my presumed-dead mother.
