Chapter 5 - The Lethal Dose

The word hung in the damp air of the motel room, completely chilling me to my core.
My father hadn't suffered a natural stroke; Maya had deliberately poisoned him to stop him from exposing her hostile takeover.
"If she used a neurotoxin, there will absolutely be heavy metal traces in his original admission bloodwork," Lucy realized immediately.
I nodded, knowing that if we could get that specific medical file, we could prove Maya was an attempted murderer.
We waited until the sun completely set before driving the stolen van to the Chicago General Hospital.
I parked in the shadows near the loading docks, helping Lucy sneak through the employee entrance using her old cleaning uniform.
We quietly navigated the sterile, brightly lit hallways, carefully avoiding the security cameras I remembered from past visits.
We finally reached the basement medical records room, which was secured by a heavy electronic keypad.
Lucy used a hairpin and a stolen maintenance badge to quickly bypass the outdated magnetic lock.
We slipped into the dark room, frantically searching through the massive rows of filing cabinets for my father's physical chart.
After twenty minutes of desperate searching, Lucy pulled a thick manila folder from the very bottom drawer.
We shined a small flashlight onto the toxicology report, confirming our absolute worst fears.
Arthur's blood contained lethal, deliberate levels of synthetic thallium, a highly toxic poison completely untraceable in standard tests.
The doctor who had signed off on the discharge papers had deliberately covered up the undeniable presence of the toxin.
We finally had the hard evidence we needed to completely destroy Maya's empire and clear my name.
Suddenly, the bright overhead fluorescent lights flickered on, completely blinding us.
Standing in the doorway was Doctor Aris, the chief of medicine who had signed my father's fraudulent discharge papers.

He wasn't holding a clipboard or a stethoscope in his trembling hands.
He was aiming a heavy, unregistered revolver directly at my forehead.
