Chapter 2 - The Stolen Empire

The two armed men filled the tiny shack with an overwhelming, terrifying presence that made the air feel instantly suffocating.

I instinctively stepped in front of Lucy and my father, desperately trying to shield them with my own body.

"Hand over the key, Alexander, and maybe your sister will let you walk away," the taller man demanded smoothly.

Maya had sent her corporate fixers to tie up the loose ends she thought were safely buried forever.

I clenched my fist around the cold brass key, my mind racing for any possible way out of this deadly trap.

Without warning, I kicked the small wooden table forward, sending the pot of hot soup flying directly into the lead gunman's face.

He screamed in agony, dropping his weapon as the scalding liquid severely blistered his skin.

I grabbed Lucy's hand and hoisted my father over my shoulder with a massive surge of adrenaline I didn't know I possessed.

We smashed through the rotting back window of the shack, tumbling out into the muddy, rain-soaked alleyway.

I dragged them toward my idling luxury SUV, throwing open the doors and shoving them safely inside.

Bullets shattered the rear windshield just as I stomped on the gas pedal, tearing out of the industrial district at reckless speeds.

My hands shook violently on the steering wheel as I navigated the slick, dangerous streets of downtown Chicago.

"We need to get to the bank before Maya realizes we escaped," I told Lucy, my voice barely recognizable to my own ears.

She nodded silently, holding my terrified father tightly in the backseat to keep him as calm as possible.

We arrived at the First Chicago Security Bank just as the heavy brass doors were unlocking for the morning business hours.

I left them safely hidden in the tinted SUV and rushed inside, presenting the rusted key to the vault manager.

He led me down into the subterranean vault, eventually leaving me alone with the long, heavy metal box.

I opened the lid with trembling hands, fully expecting to find my father's old stock certificates or family heirlooms.

Instead, I found a stack of highly classified legal documents bearing the official seal of my own furniture company.

I flipped through the pages rapidly, my blood turning instantly to ice in my veins.

Maya had forged a sweeping Power of Attorney document, legally transferring total ownership of my entire corporate empire into her name.

But the final document in the box was a printed email exchange between Maya and my biggest supplier from three years ago.

It detailed exactly how they were going to frame Lucy for embezzlement in order to get her out of the family forever.

I had destroyed my entire marriage and ruined an innocent woman's life over a brilliantly orchestrated lie.

Suddenly, the vault manager returned with two armed security guards, a cold, calculating smile spread across his face.

"I am sorry, sir, but the current owner of this account has ordered your immediate detainment."
