Chapter 4 - The Fugitive

I stared at the detectives in absolute horror, realizing Maya had already orchestrated the perfect frame job.

The bank manager was alive just an hour ago, meaning Maya's fixers had executed him the moment I escaped the vault.

"I didn't kill anyone, she is setting me up!" I yelled, desperately pointing at my sister.

Maya covered her mouth, faking a perfect expression of absolute terror and grief for the police officers.

The lead detective stepped forward with a pair of heavy steel handcuffs, ignoring my pleas for justice.

I knew that if I went into the police system, Maya's corrupt contacts would have me murdered in my holding cell before midnight.

I grabbed a heavy bronze statue from the boardroom table and hurled it directly through the floor-to-ceiling glass window.

The glass shattered into a million pieces, triggering the building's automated emergency lockdown sirens.

The sudden noise and falling glass distracted the detectives just long enough for me to dive back into the hidden freight elevator.

I hit the button for the underground loading dock, my heart pounding violently against my ribs as the doors closed.

I sprinted out of the elevator and stole a running delivery van, speeding out of the garage before the police could establish a perimeter.

I drove wildly through the back alleys of Chicago, constantly checking my rearview mirror for flashing lights.

I eventually abandoned the van a few blocks from the cheap motel and sprinted the rest of the way in the freezing rain.

I burst into our motel room, dripping wet and completely out of breath.

Lucy immediately rushed over to me, using a clean towel to patch up the deep cuts on my hands from the shattered glass.

"They framed me for murder, Lucy, we have to run away right now," I panicked, grabbing our few belongings.

Lucy grabbed my face, forcing me to look directly into her calm, steady eyes.

"Running makes you look guilty, Alexander, we have to stay and fight her with the truth," she insisted firmly.

I looked over at my father, who was watching us intensely from his spot on the lumpy mattress.

He began to hyperventilate, trying desperately to force his paralyzed vocal cords to form a specific word.

I knelt beside him, leaning my ear close to his trembling lips to hear his guttural rasps.

After a minute of agonizing effort, Arthur finally managed to speak a single, terrifying word.

"Poison."
