Chapter 6 - The Steel Trap

The world seemed to completely freeze as I stared down the barrel of my own mother's gun.

Her eyes were completely devoid of any maternal warmth, replaced entirely by the cold, calculating greed of a sociopath.

She calmly ordered me to drop my weapon and kick it away, or she would end my legacy right there in the back seat.

I slowly lowered my pistol to the concrete floor and pushed it out of reach, raising my hands in the air.

Emma was crying silently, her hands fiercely gripping her stomach in a desperate attempt to shield our unborn son.

My mother smiled a victorious, sickening smile, instructing Caleb to get up and tie my hands with the zip ties from the trunk.

Caleb stumbled to his feet, blood pouring down the side of his face, and pulled a thick plastic restraint from his pocket.

As he reached for my wrists, the wail of police sirens suddenly shattered the tense silence of the underground garage.

Blue and red lights frantically painted the concrete walls as four squad cars blocked the only exit ramp.

I had triggered the hospital's gunshot detection system when I blew out the tire, summoning a massive police response.

My mother’s confident facade instantly shattered, her hand trembling violently as the reality of the situation crashed down on her.

She desperately tried to hide the silver revolver beneath the leather seats of the SUV.

Dozens of heavily armed officers swarmed the vehicle, pulling Caleb to the ground and aggressively dragging my screaming mother from the car.

I rushed forward and pulled Emma into a fierce, protective embrace, whispering that the nightmare was finally over.

An officer gently escorted us to a waiting ambulance so the paramedics could properly examine Emma's ripped IV site.

I sat in the back of the ambulance holding my wife's hand, feeling the first true wave of relief wash over me in days.

Then, a stern-faced detective approached the open doors of the ambulance with a grim expression on his face.

He looked directly at me and stated that my mother had just shown him a legally binding contract.

He apologetically informed me that I was being placed under immediate arrest for the attempted murder of my brother.
