Chapter 3 - The Ghost Trust

I slowly walked into the hollow shell of what used to be our perfect home, my footsteps echoing loudly against the bare walls.

The locksmith stood nervously in the doorway, asking if I wanted him to call the police for a robbery.

I shook my head, knowing that this was not the work of ordinary thieves.

I knelt on the floor and picked up the crisp white envelope, my hands trembling with suppressed rage.

Inside was a legally binding eviction notice, filed and signed by my mother just hours before the dinner.

The document revealed a horrifying truth I had never known about my own financial life.

My mother secretly owned the deed to our house, having quietly manipulated the paperwork when she offered to help with our down payment years ago.

She had legally stripped us of our home the moment Emma defied her at the dining table.

I paid the confused locksmith for his time and sent him away, realizing new locks wouldn't protect a house we no longer owned.

I pulled out my phone to review the pictures of the fish bones on the plates, knowing I needed them for a massive lawsuit.

When I opened my photo gallery, an icy chill spread down my spine.

Every single photograph from that night had been remotely wiped from my device.

I realized with sickening clarity that Caleb must have hacked my cloud account when he stole Emma's phone during the assault.

They had erased the only physical proof of the abuse, leaving us completely defenseless against their narrative.

I punched the drywall in frustration, feeling hopeless as the reality of my family's immense power crushed down on me.

But then my phone buzzed with an encrypted email notification from an unknown sender.

The subject line simply read, "Look behind the hallway mirror."

I ran to the only fixture left in the house, a heavy mirror bolted to the drywall, and ripped it down to reveal a hidden, blinking nanny camera.
