Chapter 5 - The Chase in the Dark

I didn't stop to call for help, knowing that every single second mattered if I was going to save my wife and our baby.

I threw open the heavy metal door to the emergency stairwell and sprinted down the concrete steps.

The faint, metallic smell of fresh blood painted a clear path down to the underground parking garage.

I burst through the bottom exit, drawing my concealed carry pistol from my waistband as I scanned the dark, echoing concrete pillars.

A black luxury SUV was parked illegally near the loading dock, its engine idling with a low, menacing rumble.

I saw Caleb aggressively shoving a struggling, weeping Emma into the back seat of the vehicle.

My mother was already sitting in the passenger seat, calmly fixing her lipstick in the mirror as if they were going out to a theater show.

I raised my weapon, aiming directly at the rear tire of the massive vehicle.

The gunshot echoed like a cannon blast in the enclosed garage, immediately shattering the heavy rubber tire.

The SUV dropped violently to one side, completely disabling the vehicle before Caleb could even shift it into drive.

Caleb scrambled out of the driver's seat in a blind panic, holding a heavy steel tire iron in his hands.

He charged at me with a feral scream, fully committed to destroying his own brother for a piece of a hidden fortune.

I didn't hesitate, sidestepping his clumsy, enraged swing and bringing the heavy butt of my pistol down hard against his temple.

Caleb collapsed onto the dirty concrete floor in a heap, groaning in pain as the tire iron clattered away into the darkness.

I rushed to the back door of the SUV to pull my terrified wife out of the vehicle.

Before my hand could even touch the door handle, the tinted window slowly rolled down.

My mother was pointing a small, silver revolver directly at Emma's swollen belly, her finger resting heavily on the trigger.
