Chapter 2 - The Erased Evidence

My blood ran completely cold as I stared at the tiny black device clinging to Emma's heel.

They had been tracking her every move like an animal long before tonight's horrific dinner.

I crushed the device under my own boot, silencing the blinking red light permanently.

I marched to the door, threw it open, and stepped directly into the hallway, slamming it shut behind me to protect Emma.

My mother stood there with her arms crossed, flanked by my brother Caleb, both of them looking completely unbothered.

She smoothly told me that Emma was overreacting and that I needed to bring her home so the family could discipline her properly.

I didn't waste a single word arguing with her twisted logic.

I flagged down two massive hospital security guards and informed them that these people were trespassing and actively threatening a patient.

Caleb lunged forward to grab my shirt, but a guard effortlessly pinned him against the cold tile wall.

My mother shrieked in absolute outrage as they were forcefully escorted out of the maternity ward in front of dozens of staring nurses.

Once they were gone, I hired a private security contractor to stand directly outside Emma’s door for the rest of the night.

I kissed her forehead, promising I would return quickly after letting the locksmith into our house.

I drove through the dark city streets like a madman, my knuckles white on the steering wheel as fury burned in my chest.

When I finally pulled into our driveway, the locksmith's van was already waiting by the curb.

We walked up to the front porch, and I inserted my key to unlock the heavy wooden door.

The door swung open, but the interior of my home was completely unrecognizable.

Every single piece of furniture, every rug, and every photograph had been completely stripped from the house.

Our home was entirely empty, except for a single white envelope resting perfectly in the center of the bare wooden floor.
