Chapter 1 - The Silent Ward

I felt the sterile floor of the hospital room tilt violently beneath my feet as Emma’s words echoed in my mind.
My own brother had deliberately trapped my pregnant wife while my mother humiliated her.
I had spent my entire life believing my family was simply overbearing and traditional.
Now, looking at the fresh blood on Emma’s ruined maternity dress, I realized they were dangerous.
I pulled my phone from my pocket and immediately blocked every single number associated with my relatives.
Then, I searched for the best emergency locksmith in the city and paid triple the standard rate for an immediate dispatch.
Emma watched me with wide, exhausted eyes as she leaned back against the harsh white pillows.
I promised her that she would never have to spend another second of her life in fear of the people who raised me.
A heavy silence settled over the room as the heart monitor beeped in a steady, reassuring rhythm for our unborn child.
I sat on the edge of the bed and gently stroked Emma’s hair, trying to wash away the memory of my mother’s cruel hands.
Suddenly, the heavy wooden door of the hospital room rattled as someone aggressively tried the locked handle from the outside.
I stood up immediately, stepping between my vulnerable wife and the entrance.
The handle violently shook again, followed by a sharp, demanding knock that I recognized instantly.
My mother’s voice carried clearly through the thick wood, demanding that I open the door and stop acting like a child.

I had absolutely no idea how she had discovered which hospital we were in.
I looked down at the floor and saw a small, blinking GPS tracker perfectly attached to the bottom of Emma’s bloody shoe.
