Chapter 9 - The House of Glass

The board members stared in stunned silence at the yellowed parchment shaking violently in Julian's white-knuckled grip.
Harold Finch stepped forward, his voice desperate.
"The waiver is fully certified under Illinois law," Finch argued, sweat pouring down his collar.
"It supersedes the foundation charter!"
"It guarantees Julian full bloodline inheritance status regardless of biological lineage!"
I didn't flinch.
I looked at Harold Finch with pure, cold pity.
"That document was notarized by a man named Walter Briggs in Cook County twenty years ago, correct, Harold?" I asked softly.
Julian blinked, thrown off balance.
"What difference does that make?" Julian snarled.
"The signature is genuine!"
"Walter Briggs was convicted of running a multi-million-dollar document forgery mill three years after that date," the Assistant District Attorney said, opening a heavy black legal folder.
"And Eleanor Vance hired the former head of the FBI’s forensic document unit five years ago to run a chemical analysis on that exact waiver."
"The ink on your document, Julian, was manufactured in 2018."
"You forged your dead father's signature six years ago when you realized the trust was slipping through your fingers."
Julian stared at the paper in his hands as if it had suddenly burst into flames.
His mouth opened, but no sound came out.
"And that is only the beginning of your problems, Mr. Vance," the ADA continued, signaling to the federal marshals.
The massive projection screens on the wall flickered to life.
High-definition surveillance footage filled the screens, showing Chloe Brooks standing in Eleanor’s Westchester bedroom, methodically emptying prescription capsules into the wastebasket and refilling them with white powder.
Timestamped audio files played through the boardroom speakers:
"He's in the shower, old wife... We’re in Maui... Stop calling."
Followed immediately by Julian’s recorded voice from his luxury suite at the Four Seasons:
"Make sure she doesn't survive the weekend, Chloe. If she lives until Monday, the forensic audit goes live."
A collective gasp of sheer horror erupted from the board members.
Two elderly executives pushed their chairs back in disgust, refusing to even look in Julian's direction.
Chloe looked at the screens, her chest heaving, her eyes wild with terror.
She turned on Julian like a cornered viper.
"He told me to do it!" Chloe screamed, lunging across the table, pointing a shaking finger directly at Julian's face.
"He promised me forty million dollars!"
"He told me his mother was an old vegetable who was ruining his life!"
"It was his idea to switch the pills!"
"He bought the powder through my brother's contacts!"
"Shut up, you stupid whore!" Julian roared, losing all control.
He grabbed Chloe by the lapels of her silk blouse and shoved her violently against the credenza, sending the crystal champagne flutes crashing to the floor in a shower of sparkling shards.
"You recorded those calls?" Julian screamed, his face twisted into a demonic mask of fury.
"You destroyed me!"
Before Julian could strike her, Marcus Cole moved with blinding, lethal speed.
He closed the distance in two strides, grabbed Julian’s right arm, twisted it behind his back, and slammed the former CEO face-down onto the mahogany table.
The gold Montblanc pen snapped in half beneath Julian's cheek.
Cold steel handcuffs clicked around Julian’s wrists with a sharp, final snap.
Two federal agents seized Chloe by her arms, dragging her away from the shattered glass as she sobbed hysterically.
The emerald pendant around her neck was violently unclasped by a female marshal and placed into an evidence bag.
Julian lay pinned against the table, his expensive suit ruined, his cheek pressed against the wood he had claimed to own.
He turned his bloodshot, wild eyes toward me, a venomous, broken sneer twisting his lips.
"You think you won, Clara?" Julian hissed, blood dripping from his split lip onto the contract.
"You think you get to sit in my father's chair and play queen?"
May you like
"You will never find what I buried beneath the foundation of the summer cabin in Lake Placid."
"You will spend the rest of your pathetic life wondering what died out there twenty years ago."
