Chapter 8 - The Hostile Boardroom

The fiftieth-floor boardroom of the Vance Tower offered a panoramic, godlike view of the Manhattan skyline beneath the early morning clouds.
Twenty board members in custom charcoal suits sat around the thirty-foot table of polished African mahogany.
Julian stood at the head of the table, looking radiant in a bespoke midnight-blue suit, his hair immaculately styled.
Chloe sat in the chair immediately to his right, wearing an emerald silk blouse that matched Eleanor's stolen pendant perfectly.
Three magnum bottles of Dom Pérignon sat chilling in silver ice buckets along the credenza.
"Gentlemen," Julian announced, resting his palms flat against the gleaming wood.
"Today marks the dawn of a new era for this enterprise."
"With my mother's tragic passing, the leadership transition is complete."
"The Apex Global Consortium has offered eight hundred million dollars in cold cash for our operational assets and patents."
"Each member of this board will walk away with a forty-million-dollar golden parachute before noon."
Several older board members exchanged eager, greedy glances.
Harold Finch stood by the projection screen, holding the leather-bound acquisition contract open to the final signature page.
"All we require to execute the transfer is the chairman's signature and the board's ratification vote," Finch announced smoothly.
Julian picked up a gold Montblanc pen, unscrewing the cap with theatrical flair.
"To my mother's memory," Julian said with a sickening smile.
"And to our limitless future."
Before the tip of his pen could touch the paper, the heavy double oak doors of the boardroom swung open with a thunderous crash.
The room went completely, utterly silent.
I walked into the boardroom, wearing a tailored black suit that concealed the white bandages wrapped around my ribs.
Flanking me on either side were Marcus Cole, the Chief of the Manhattan DA’s Financial Crimes Bureau, and four armed federal marshals.
Julian’s pen froze an inch above the signature line.
His face contorted into a mixture of pure shock and incandescent fury.
"Security!" Julian roared, slamming the pen onto the table.
"What is the meaning of this?"
"This is a closed, private board meeting!"
"Have this woman removed from the premises immediately!"
None of the security guards at the door moved.
Marcus Cole stepped forward, flashing a high-level federal credential that made the guards instantly stand down.
"Sit down, Julian," I said, my voice cutting through the room like a razor.
Chloe jumped up from her chair, her manicured nails digging into the mahogany.
"You have a restraining order against you, Clara!" Chloe shrieked, her voice cracking with hysterical panic.
"Judge Miller signed it yesterday!"
"Judge Miller vacated that order at six o'clock this morning," the Assistant District Attorney announced, stepping forward with an official court order.
"After reviewing preliminary surveillance footage of Mrs. Vance’s vehicle being deliberately rammed by your brother, Damian Brooks."
Chloe gasped, turning dead white as she dropped back into her chair.
Julian swallowed hard, his arrogant smirk beginning to fray at the edges, but he gripped the table and forced a laugh.
"A domestic dispute has nothing to do with corporate governance, gentlemen," Julian said, looking frantically around the table at the frozen board members.
"I am the legal heir."
"I hold the executive proxy."
"I am signing this sale right now!"
"You can't sign a sale for assets you don't own, Julian," I said, placing Eleanor’s bound leather ledger in the center of the table.
"Read section twelve of the original Vance foundation charter, gentlemen."
"The executive voting shares of Vance Industries are permanently restricted to the biological descendants of Arthur Vance."
"Julian was adopted through a private arrangement in Chicago when he was six months old."
Julian let out a wild, barking laugh of pure desperation.
"You're lying!" Julian screamed.
"My father gave me his name!"
"He gave you his name, but Eleanor never gave you the bloodline shares," I answered coldly.
"And three weeks ago, she executed the secondary trust clause."
"In the event of an adopted heir attempting hostile liquidation, the entire controlling block of sixty-five percent reverts entirely to her named beneficiary."
"Which is me."
Julian’s eyes bulged with madness.
He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out a worn, folded parchment with a triumphant snarl.
"I anticipated this, you bitch!" Julian screamed, holding the paper in the air.

"My father signed an irrevocable bloodline waiver twenty years ago!"
"I have the original right here!"
