Chapter 7 - The Bloodline Defense

The world spun in a dizzying blur of gray gravel, spinning trees, and the deafening shriek of tearing metal.

The driver’s side door crumpled inward, trapping my left leg beneath the deformed dashboard.

The metallic tang of blood filled my mouth.

Through the spiderwebbed glass of the windshield, the heavy steel door of the dump truck swung open.

A tall, broad-shouldered man stepped down onto the gravel, carrying a heavy steel crowbar in his gloved hand.

It was Chloe’s older brother, Damian Brooks—a disgraced former private investigator who handled Julian's off-the-books muscle work.

He walked toward my wrecked sedan with terrifying, measured steps.

"Julian said you wouldn't give up those documents quietly, Clara," Damian muttered through the shattered driver's window.

He raised the crowbar, aiming directly for my temple to finish what the collision had started.

I clutched the hidden drives against my chest, unable to move my trapped legs.

Suddenly, a deafening gunshot cracked through the Westchester woods.

The crowbar in Damian's hand flew backward, sparking wildly as a high-caliber round sheared the steel clean in half.

Damian let out a strangled cry of shock, clutching his bleeding, numbed fingers.

From the tree line, a sleek armored SUV tore through the wooden split-rail fence, sliding to a halt ten feet from my crushed vehicle.

The driver's door kicked open.

A man in his late fifties with a weathered face, a military buzz cut, and a tailored gray suit stepped out holding a smoking tactical pistol.

It was Marcus Cole.

For thirty years, Marcus had served as the chief of covert security for Arthur Vance before retiring to an upstate farm.

"Step away from the vehicle, Damian," Marcus said, his voice flat, low, and vibrating with absolute authority.

"Or the next round goes straight through your femoral artery."

Damian looked at Marcus, recognized the legendary security director, and bolted into the thick woods like a frightened animal.

Marcus didn't waste time chasing him.

He hurried to my car, wrenched the mangled door open with terrifying physical strength, and carefully lifted me from the wreckage.

"Did you get the drives, Clara?" Marcus asked, wrapping a heavy wool blanket around my bleeding shoulders.

"I have them," I gasped, wincing in agony as he carried me toward his armored SUV.

"Eleanor called me three weeks ago," Marcus said as he placed me into the passenger seat and threw the vehicle into reverse.

"She told me Julian was planning an aggressive move to liquidate the company before the weekend."

"She ordered me to stay in the shadows until you secured the vault evidence."

Marcus pulled a secure satellite phone from the center console and handed it to me.

"Where are we going?" I asked, wiping blood from my cheek.

"To the Manhattan District Attorney's office," Marcus replied, his jaw set like iron.

"We have exactly fourteen hours before the emergency shareholder vote at Vance Industries."

"Julian called a sunrise meeting for eight o'clock tomorrow morning."

"He is signing the final sale documents to Apex Global for eight hundred million dollars."

"If that sale goes through, Clara, the corporate entity dissolves, the funds vanish into offshore holding shell corporations, and no court in America will be able to touch him."

I looked down at the blood soaking through my sleeve, feeling the freezing metal of the flash drives pressed against my ribs.

"He won't sign that sale, Marcus," I said, my voice hardening into steel.

"Because he doesn't own a single share."

Marcus glanced at me through the rearview mirror, a grim, knowing smile touching his lips.

"Then let's go show Wall Street who actually owns the empire."
