Chapter 2 - The Vault at Dawn

The rain dripped from my soaked trench coat onto the hardwood floor of the foyer.
Harold Finch stood before me like a vulture that had arrived early to pick over a fresh corpse.
"Julian is on a plane back from Maui as we speak," Finch continued, his tone dripping with patronizing condescension.
"He asked me to secure his mother’s personal effects before you could liquidate anything to cover your personal debts."
"My debts?" I asked, taking a slow step into the room.
"I spent my own savings to pay for her heart medications because Julian cut off her supplemental insurance six months ago."
Finch merely smiled, unaffected by the truth.
"That will be sorted out in probate, Clara."
"As for tonight, Julian has officially revoked your access to all household accounts and properties."
"You are trespassing on Vance estate property."
"Leave the keys on the counter and walk away before I call the local precinct."
I did not argue with him.
Arguing with a bought-and-paid-for attorney was an amateur’s game.
I looked Finch in the eyes, nodded once, and reached into my pocket as if reaching for my keychain.
Instead, I pulled out my phone and tapped the screen once.
The audio recording of Chloe Brooks laughing over ocean waves blasted through the small apartment with terrifying clarity.
"He's in the shower, old wife... We’re in Maui... Stop calling."
Finch’s professional composure fractured for a fraction of a second.
"That was recorded on a hospital line with Eleanor’s medical proxy consent form active," I said evenly.
"If you call the police, I call the local press and the New York Post’s legal desk."
"Let us see how Vance Industries’ stock price handles a headline about the CEO abandoning his dying mother to fund an adulterous weekend in Maui."
Finch’s jaw tightened into a rigid line.
He knew the fragile state of Julian's public relations; Vance Industries was currently seeking a sixty-million-dollar institutional loan.
"You’re playing a dangerous game, Clara," Finch warned, his knuckles whitening around the handle of his briefcase.
"I am not playing any game, Harold," I said quietly.
"Now get out of this house before I make that recording public before the markets open."
Finch hesitated, assessed the cold fury burning in my eyes, and brushed past me into the rainy night without another word.
I didn't waste a single second.
I hailed a yellow cab and arrived at the grand limestone facade of First Heritage Private Bank just as the dawn sun cracked through the Manhattan fog.
The private vault opened at precisely seven in the morning.
I presented Eleanor’s silver key and the eight-digit sequence to the senior vice president, an elderly gentleman who had known the Vance family for four decades.
He led me down into the subterranean quiet of the vault, his face solemn.
He slid heavy metal box number four hundred and four out of the wall and placed it on the velvet-lined viewing table.
The silver key slid into the lock with a smooth, heavy click.
Inside lay three thick, bound leather ledgers, an ironclad testamentary codicil, and a set of bearer bonds.
I opened the top ledger and felt the room tilt on its axis.
Julian had spent fifteen years telling the media and Wall Street that he had built Vance Industries from scratch through sheer entrepreneurial genius.
It was all an elaborate, manufactured lie.
Every single commercial patent, every building, and sixty-five percent of the controlling shares were held in Eleanor’s name through a blind holding company.
Julian was merely a salaried executive who held his seat at the pleasure of his mother’s trust.
And the codicil, signed and notarized just three weeks ago, transferred complete, unconditional ownership of the controlling shares to me in the event of Julian’s infidelity or abandonment.
My hands trembled with the realization of the absolute power Eleanor had placed in my hands.
Suddenly, the bank vice president stepped back into the private viewing room, his face pale and sweat glistening on his forehead.
"Mrs. Vance, we have a catastrophic situation," he whispered, shutting the heavy vault door behind him.

"Someone just submitted an emergency electronic wire transfer authorization from your late mother-in-law's primary liquidity reserve."
"Fifty million dollars is currently in transit to an offshore account in Grand Cayman registered under the name of Chloe Brooks."
