Chapter 6 - Behind the Walls

The iron gates of the Vance estate in Westchester swung shut behind my rental car.

The sprawling stone mansion looked dark, cold, and entirely abandoned under the gray late-afternoon sky.

Julian had already dispatched his private security detail to stand guard at the front doors.

Two large men in black tactical jackets blocked the grand limestone entrance.

"Mrs. Vance," the lead guard said, holding up a hand.

"Mr. Julian gave strict instructions."

"You are only permitted to retrieve one suitcase of personal clothing from the guest quarters."

"We are required to inspect the bag before you depart."

"Understood," I replied softly.

"I need to collect my winter coats from the lower storage room first."

The guard hesitated, then stepped aside, gesturing toward the service entrance near the garage.

"Ten minutes, ma'am."

"We have orders to lock down the entire perimeter at five o'clock."

I walked through the cold, tiled basement hallway, bypassing the laundry room and heading straight toward the historic wine cellar.

The heavy iron door swung open with a rusted screech.

The cellar smelled of damp stone, old oak, and vintage cabernet.

I walked past rows of dusty bottles until I reached the third massive oak cask resting against the foundation wall.

Behind it, the mortar between the gray stones looked uneven, slightly cracked.

I ran my fingertips along the rough surface until my nail caught on a small, disguised indentation.

The silver key slid into the stone crevice with terrifying precision.

I turned it hard to the right.

With a muffled mechanical thud, a two-foot section of the stone wall popped forward by two inches.

Inside the hidden alcove sat a fireproof metal lockbox and a high-definition digital storage receiver wired directly into the estate's internal power grid.

Eleanor had not spent her final years staring blankly out of windows as Julian had claimed.

She had spent them preparing for the inevitable betrayal.

I opened the lockbox and pulled out three flash drives labeled with precise dates and medical log numbers.

Beside them lay an audio recorder containing Eleanor’s frail, distinct voice.

I pressed play.

"Clara, my darling daughter," Eleanor’s recorded voice rasped through the small speaker, weak but razor-sharp.

"If you are listening to this, Julian has already tried to claim I lost my mind."

"He doesn't know that three months ago, I discovered why my heart medication was no longer working."

"Chloe Brooks didn't just visit my home as an interior decorator."

"She was replacing my daily beta-blockers with powdered sugar capsules."

"They were intentionally inducing my arrhythmias, Clara."

"They wanted me to die before the five-year federal audit window closed on Vance Industries."

My breath seized in my throat.

This wasn't just corporate embezzlement.

This was premeditated, cold-blooded attempted murder.

Eleanor had installed pinhole surveillance cameras in her bedroom, recording every time Chloe entered to switch the pill bottles while Julian waited in the car outside.

I grabbed the hard drives, shoved them deep into the inner pockets of my coat, and pushed the stone brick back into place.

I walked up the wooden cellar stairs, my heart pounding like a war drum.

I slipped out through the side terrace door, avoiding the guards at the front entrance, and reached my car parked at the end of the long gravel drive.

As I turned the ignition, a massive black commercial dump truck roared out from the blind curve behind the estate gates.

It accelerated aggressively, crossing the center line and barreling straight toward my vehicle with deafening fury.

May you like

There was no screech of brakes.

The truck rammed directly into the driver’s side of my car, spinning the vehicle across the wet gravel in a violent explosion of shattered glass and twisted steel.
